The title may suggest that we arrived at this DBYN seminar in Vienna just to be told to leave, but thankfully not! After 14 or so hours of travelling, I arrived to the Studentenheim Don Bosco to a warm welcome from the Salesian community and the volunteers who had already arrived. WYD in sunny Spain was the second world youth day I had attended. I went with the Salesian’s from the UK, and we had a fantastic group, varying in age, interests and experiences.  Even the preparation weekends were an experience in themselves, getting to know new friends and listening to everyone’s experiences of the Salesians, WYD and life in general. The National Youth Ministry Symbol blessed by Pope Benedict the Sixteenth on his trip to the UK has been touring the country ever since. As the Youth Ministry Team of the Salesian Province of St Thomas of Canterbury, we work to recognise and connect with the aspirations of the young, welcoming them – seeing our youth ministry not as a product, but as an experience of relationship – both within the formal and non-formal educative field. Our vision sees the young as ‘children of God’ deeply loved by Him, whoever and wherever they are.

The vision of our Province is that we present a dynamic and energetic youth ministry team with SDB leadership and membership; which develops a real partnership with co-workers; which has an impact on the local, national and international scene; and which provides formation programmes so that all who engage with us also experiences Salesian formation at some level.

So who are the Salesians?

They are a Roman Catholic Religious Order founded by St John Bosco – a priest who worked with the young and the poor. Today they have projects all around the world – including schools, homes for street children, parishes, youth centres, Retreat centres and training centres.
